Vietnam War Artifacts Sought for Exhibit
Bulloch County’s Military Heritage is the county’s premier exhibit space that examines the involvement of Bulloch County, Georgia in the history of American warfare. The permanent exhibit lives in the Bulloch County annex off of Main Street and is open to the public. As new scholarships opened up new opportunities to expand the exhibit, the Georgia Southern Museum is renovating the space with the help of a History Department graduate student, Breezy James. The project seeks to educate the public on American military history and share Bulloch County’s heritage by memorializing those who died in service and by studying the past.
Currently, the exhibit covers the roots of the county in the American Revolution through the Global War on Terror. The exhibit recognizes those who paid the ultimate price in combat through memorial plaques. The space presents a rotating central exhibit that explores one war and its impact in the county. It features artifacts and interactive components to further dive into the past and understand the war on a deeper level. There is now an exhibit on the Global War on Terrorism, and the upcoming installation will highlight the Vietnam War.
The Georgia Southern Museum is seeking local artifacts to showcase in the exhibit. To reach this goal, they are hosting an event to collect artifacts from the Vietnam War era, which will be held at the Statesboro Convention and Visitors Bureau (Visit Statesboro) on November 27th, 2018 from 4 o’clock to 8 o’clock in the evening. Come by during the open house and bring your artifacts and curators will take a look. They are seeking to add interviews to the Georgia Southern Museum collection from local Vietnam veterans as well, and some will be featured in the exhibit. If you are interested in loaning or donating items to the museum for the exhibit, or if you would like to be interviewed for the project, come by the SCVB on November 27th.

Georgia Southern Theatre Presents “The Amen Corner” by James Baldwin
The Amen Corner tells the story of Margaret Alexander, a single mother and pastor. Alexander must face
the consequences as a secret from her past forces her to reevaluate the role of religion and family. She is faced with this choice as her son stands on the brink of manhood and must choose his own path.
Directed by Mical Whitaker, this production is the 35th anniversary of the first performance of this script on the Georgia Southern Stage.
The show opens on November 7th and runs through November 14th. Curtain is at 7:30pm evenings and 2pm for the Sunday Matinee.

The upcoming panel for The Amen Corner is titled “The Legacy of James Baldwin and Integration at Georgia Southern University”. The panel will be exploring James Baldwin’s writings and the current social issues of today which will lead into a conversation about the Integration at Georgia Southern University, looking back, examining today and exploring the opportunities of tomorrow as we celebrate an impressive history of African American Theatre.

Get Into the Halloween Mood with Nosferatu at Georgia Southern University’s Performing Arts Center
The Performing Arts Center at Georgia Southern is excited to celebrate the spooky Halloween season with a screening of horror classic Nosferatu the way it was intended to be seen, accompanied live by The Peacherine Orchestra. Tickets are already on sale of the performance on Tuesday, October 30, at 7:30pm.
Released in 1922, Nosferatu is considered one of the most foreboding and influential horror films in the history of cinema. In this first-ever screen adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, what is supposed to be a simple real estate transaction leads an intrepid businessman deep into the heart of Transylvania, and the castle of the otherworldly Count Orlok, portrayed by the legendary Max Schreck in a performance which has spawned its own mythology. But is the Count just the wealthy eccentric that he appears to be or something much more sinister?
This cinema classic is accompanied live by the twelve piece Peacherine Orchestra, hailed as “the premier American ragtime orchestra” by the Washington Post. Formed by conductor Andrew Greene in 2010, the orchestra recreates the syncopated stylings of a bygone era – ragtime, theatre, and dance music, along with underscoring classic silent films using the original orchestral scores, and has performed at numerous leading venues, including The Kennedy Center, the Library of Congress, and the American Film Institute. Travel back to the roaring 20s with us and see Nosferatu as it would have been screened originally, with its hauntingly beautiful authentic musical score, in this performance perfect for music and film fans alike!
Performing Arts Center Director Stacie McDaniel says, “This is the first time that the PAC has undertaken a project like this, and we are so excited to be dipping our toes into the world of film screening. This program is particularly special, however, because of the live music element. It really helps to bridge the space between film and live performance. I think this is going to be such a unique event for Statesboro.”

Georgia Southern Theatre Brings Emilie Du Châtelet to Life
Georgia Southern Theatre brings “Émilie: The Marquise Du Chatelet Defends Her Life Tonight“ by Lauren Gunderson as the fall season opener.
The 18th century scientific genius Émilie du Châtelet is back and determined to answer the question she
died with: love or philosophy, head or heart? In this highly theatrical rediscovery of one of history’s most intriguing women, Émilie defends her life and loves and ends up with both a formula and a legacy that permeates history.
Directed by Lisa L. Abbott, Émilie is the story of a mathematical genius, the first woman published by the French Academy of Science, a member of the royalty and a lover of Voltaire. The Marquise overcomes the challenges faced by women of her time by living her life on her own terms. She fought for her own education, carried out experiments in physics and completed a translation and commentary of Isaac Newton’s Principia Mathematica that is still in use to date.
Lauren Gunderson is an American playwright who is best known for her plays about women in science and history and comedies based on Shakespeare. She is currently one of America’s top 20 most produced playwrights.
Georgia Southern Theatre brings Émilie Du Châtelet to life on Wednesday, September 26 and runs
through Wednesday, 0ctober 3. Curtain for all performances is at 7:30pm (The Sunday Matinee is on September 30 at 2pm). We encourage audience members to arrive at least 15 minutes early as all seats are open admission.

GEORGIA TOURISM ANNOUNCES 2018 “100 PLATES LOCALS LOVE” LIST

The Georgia Department of Economic Development’s Tourism Division (GDEcD) today released the 2018 state culinary guide, Georgia Eats. The fourth annual digest-sized guide features the wildly popular “100 Plates Locals Love” list, as well as 10 flavor tours that showcase inspiring dining options, a gallery of the state’s most Instagrammable foods, unique festivals, delectable recipes from a few of Georgia’s celebrated chefs and more.
Georgia Eats was initially published in conjunction with the “Year of Culinary” campaign in 2015. The enthusiastic response from visitors led tourism officials to continue publishing it annually. Georgia Eats has become one of the state’s most popular marketing pieces with a print circulation of 187,000 and 62,000 unique page views via ExploreGeorgia.org.
With diverse and flavorful crops, farm-to-table dining, food festivals, cooking schools, award-winning wineries, agritourism trails, talented local chefs, u-pick farms, and much more, Georgia continues to emerge as a leading culinary destination in the South.
“There is no better way to immerse yourself in Georgia’s history and culture than through our unique food and dining offerings,” said Kevin Langston, deputy commissioner for tourism at the Georgia Department of Economic Development. “Whether you’re looking for local favorites or finding the best food festival for a weekend away, Georgia Eats is the perfect guide to delicious experiences you can’t find anywhere else.”
The cover of Georgia Eats features Chef-farmer Matthew Raiford, owner of The Famer and the Larder in downtown Brunswick, Ga. A 2018 James Beard nominee, Chef Raiford’s restaurant gives a whole new meaning to farm-to-table as many of the ingredients come from Raiford’s nearby family farm, Gilliard Farms, which has been in his family since 1874.

The Georgia Southern University’s Performing Arts Center, better known as the PAC, is located in the heart of campus on Plant Drive. It’s mission is “to present diverse, quality cultural experiences to the Georgia Southern University and regional communities through the performing arts.; to support and enhance the University’s performing art departments.; to promote the discovery, appreciation, and enrichment of the performing arts to all with accessibility to perform and train in a professional, state-of-the-art performing arts center.” This is certainly being achieved!
From Live From Nashville to the big band Equinox Orchestra to the Moscow Festival Ballet’s “Sleeping Beauty” performances, you can find a show to interest you. Like Broadway? Check out The Inspiration of Broadway scheduled in April. Have a child in the Bulloch County schools? There is a wonderful school matinee series where books are brought to life on stage with engaging music and acting to lift the stories right off the pages!
The PAC is also the site of other community and university sponsored events open to the public, such as the Rockin’ Out Alzheimer’s event schedule on January 23rd which is a Billy Joel experience. In addition, check out the music and opera performances by GSU students.
